It is not just about the cars: AUTOLINK 2018 “Fit for Future”

As trainee patent attorneys, from time to time we get to attend networking events and conferences. It’s a great way to explore the various industries we are involved with in our daily practice, and also to meet with interesting people in the process.

On Wednesday 20th June, Grace and I attended the Autolink 2018 “Fit for Future” event organised by a network of technology organisations, including ESTnet and the Welsh Automotive Forum. It was clear from the delegates list that the event would be very well attended. The morning session was allocated mostly for the presentations about the current landscape in Wales regarding automotive industry and elements that are necessary to consider for continued improvement. The main topics were new product introduction capabilities, supply chain competitiveness in the UK, effects of Brexit and Industry-Academia collaboration.

While the speakers did a fantastic job explaining the 5-point plan for improving the automotive industry in Wales over the coming few years, as the lunch began to be laid out a few couldn’t resist paying more attention to the selection of sandwiches than to the speakers themselves! That said, we now have a better understanding of where the industry is headed in the coming years and innovation, and IP will play an important role in that.

During and after lunch we had chance to meet and speak with people who have interesting stories to share. We believe it is those experiences and stories shared during these events that make up the true value of such networking events as it enabled us to understand better why people do what they do and provide better solutions to their problems.

Why more women should pursue careers within STEM and embrace their inner STEM superhero

As soon as Jodie Whittaker jumped in her Tardis this week she changed gender role perceptions for a whole new generation of young women. The first female Doctor Who’s ground-breaking turn has not only served to challenge decades of attitudes towards traditionally male-dominated roles, but could even encourage a new wave of budding scientists to explore a career in science. STEM roles have traditionally experienced a gender divide, with more men than women pursuing a career across Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics industries. However, intellectual property firm Wynne- Jones IP said STEM offers “unparalleled” opportunities to young women looking for a rewarding and enriching career.)…
