Stuart Greenwood

Senior Patent Attorney
Wynne Jones IP Own Thinking

Three things you didn't know about Stuart:

  • I was one of the first to take advantage of the Shared Parental Leave scheme when it was introduced in 2014 and took eight months off work to look after my daughter from when she was around six months old. I then returned to work part-time to continue being the primary carer for her and went on extended leave again a few years later when my son was born. I returned to work full-time when my son reached school age.
  • I enjoy running and head out most days. While not especially fast, I have so far completed 15 marathons, including London (three times), Berlin, Edinburgh, Richmond and the South Downs.
  • I am also a lifelong percussionist and drummer and have played in many groups over the years, from Orchestras performing at the Royal Albert Hall to the neighbourhood band at the annual street party. At home, I keep a growing collection of percussion instruments and an ever-expanding drumkit.

Experience:

Stuart is a European and UK Chartered Patent Attorney who began his IP career in 2007. Before entering the profession, he worked as a mechanical engineer with one of the world's most prestigious automotive companies, where his product development work helped to analyse handling characteristics and optimise the rear suspension for the next generation of their best-selling car. This gave him valuable hands-on experience with high-performance vehicles, which continues to inform his work with clients in the automotive and wider mechanical engineering sectors.

Stuart handles a broad range of technologies, with particular expertise in automotive innovations such as autonomous driver aids (crash avoidance, electronic stability control, lane change and automatic parking), and in-car communication technologies. Beyond the automotive field, he has substantial experience in aerospace, energy and renewables, medical devices, and oil and gas. His work has spanned offshore windfarms, waste recycling and battery technology, through to inhalers, stents and emergency body-temperature cooling systems.

Over the course of his career, Stuart has advised clients on the full patent lifecycle, from freedom to operate (FTO) and drafting through to prosecution, grant, opposition and appeal. He has acted for clients of all sizes, from SMEs to multinational corporations, and supports them with both IP portfolio management and strategic planning.

Since 2016, Stuart has also served as an Examiner for the UK Final Diploma examination: Drafting of Patent Specifications, helping to train and guide the next generation of patent attorneys.

Stuart is additionally part of a network of attorneys, coordinated by the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, who provide pro bono IP risk assessments for entrants to the Earthshot Prize - the global environmental prize launched in 2020 by Prince William and The Royal Foundation. This work reflects Stuart's passion for green technologies and his commitment to supporting innovation that addresses global sustainability challenges.
