CIPA Informals at Dyson HQ

On Thursday 24th May the South West & Wales CIPA Informals had their second event of 2018, hosted for the first time by Dyson! There was much anticipation and excitement about vacuum cleaners and hair dryers from the trainees, with a full compliment of 30 turning up! The event happened in the fantastic looking Lighting Café on the Malmesbury Campus, where a fighter jet is just hanging from the ceiling. Dyson provided drinks (Mr Dyson’s own wine) and nibbles, followed by a presentation from three current Patent attorneys, then more drinks and food. The presentation focused on the day-to-day role of an in-house attorney (patents and trade marks) and the differences with a typical private practice role with plenty of Dyson specific anecdotes. The Dyson attorneys really engaged with everyone and answered many questions almost struggling to get people to leave at the end of the allotted time. Everyone resoundingly agreed it was very interesting and good fun. It marks a second successful  event with myself as Secretary and I am really enjoying the role. The next event will following in the coming months and I am always looking for people with a good idea or to help host!

Why more women should pursue careers within STEM and embrace their inner STEM superhero

As soon as Jodie Whittaker jumped in her Tardis this week she changed gender role perceptions for a whole new generation of young women. The first female Doctor Who’s ground-breaking turn has not only served to challenge decades of attitudes towards traditionally male-dominated roles, but could even encourage a new wave of budding scientists to explore a career in science. STEM roles have traditionally experienced a gender divide, with more men than women pursuing a career across Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics industries. However, intellectual property firm Wynne- Jones IP said STEM offers “unparalleled” opportunities to young women looking for a rewarding and enriching career.)…
